Beka Davituliani, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Saturday said he expected Georgia would obtain the European Union membership candidate status next week and expressed support to Ukraine and Moldova to open accession negotiations with the bloc.

In his comments to the media, Davituliani added the EU should commence negotiations with Georgia as well, “soon” after granting the country its candidate status.

Georgia “objectively” deserved the EU candidate status last year, he noted, stressing “unfortunately” the EU “did not make the right decision then”.

The European Commission on November 8 issued the recommendation for the European Council to grant Georgia the EU candidate status. The final decision on the country’s candidacy will be made by the Council next week.
