German Ambassador vows Berlin’s support for Georgia’s EU candidacy

Peter Fischer, the German Ambassador to Georgia, on Wednesday said his country’s Government would unequivocally support granting the European Union membership candidate status to Georgia.

In his remarks over the next week’s summit of the European Council that must endorse the bloc’s enlargement package, Fischer noted the membership candidate status was a “very important” step on Georgia's path to EU membership.

We have a recommendation from the European Commission and I hope that next weekend the European Council will make a positive decision regarding the granting of EU candidate status”, he said.

The German diplomat stressed the candidate status was a “clear signal to economic actors” for Georgia to participate in the EU market.
