Georgian cultural institutions, industry professionals and officials on Saturday sent their tributes after the passing away of the popular theatre and film actor Tengiz Archvadze at the age of 91.
The Culture Ministry paid homage to “the outstanding” actor and People’s Artist of Georgia, expressing “deep sorrow” over his death.
Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili sent his condolences to the family and friends of Archvadze, noting he was “an incomparable master of art” and "a real star” of Georgian cinematography, characterised by the “decent personal qualities”.
Tributes to the late artist also came in from Marjanishvili Theatre and Tbilisi's Rustaveli Theatre, where Archvadze had performed many of his roles.
Archvadze played over 100 roles in Georgian theatre and film, creating many memorable characters, including I Can See the Sun, Mother, Betrayal, The Right Hand of the Grand Master, Kind People and Data Tutashkhia.
A recipient of several titles, including the People’s Artist of Georgia, Shota Rustaveli, Kote Marjanishvili, Mikheil Tumanishvili and Akaki Khorava state prizes, and Order of Honour, Archvadze was also named Honorary Citizen of Tbilisi.
A star in his name was unveiled outside Marjanishvili Theatre in 2011, and Archvadze was awarded with the special prize of the Culture Ministry in 2017 for his special contribution to the development of art.
