Georgian PM pays tribute to acclaimed late actor Tengiz Archvadze

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Tuesday paid tribute to Tengiz Archvadze, an acclaimed film and theatre actor who died on Saturday aged 91, at his funeral ceremony. 

The head of the Georgian Government and his wife extended their condolences to relatives and family of the deceased actor, before his burial at the Didube Pantheon in Tbilisi. 

Archvadze starred in a number of Georgian films and was cast in theatre characters during his long career. 

A recipient of several titles including the state Order of Honour, the title of the People’s Artist of Georgia, and the Shota Rustaveli, Kote Marjanishvili, Mikheil Tumanishvili and Akaki Khorava state prizes, Archvadze was also named an Honorary Citizen of Tbilisi.

A star in his name was unveiled outside Marjanishvili Theatre in Tbilisi in 2011, with the stage and cinema actor also awarded a special prize of the Culture Ministry in 2017 for his contributions to the development of domestic performing arts.
