Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili will address speakers and presidents of parliament from the 46 member states of the Council of Europe and many partner, observer and neighbouring countries at the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament in Dublin.

As part of his visit to Ireland, Papuashvili will also hold bilateral meetings with his colleagues, including the parliament speakers of the European Union member states, the Parliament press office said.

The Parliament Speaker is to review the progress achieved by Georgia in implementing the 12 priorities outlined by the EU for granting its candidate membership status to the country.

Papuashvili stressed he would also discuss the decision the EU has to make on Georgia’s candidacy with the bloc’s member parliament speakers in order to “rectify the mistake [of not granting the country candidate status last year]. It is important to have their support in this regard”, he added.

The official said the format of the Conference would also be used to “once again” deepen the relationships between the parliaments.

The major European parliamentary summit, which is held every two years under the auspices of the Strasbourg-based Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, will take place from 28 to 29 September.
