Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Tuesday claimed there was “no reason” not to grant the country the European Union membership candidate status later this year.

In his remarks over the matter, Papuashvili claimed the European Union would approach the decision on Georgia’s EU candidate status bid with a “different” responsibility this year.

After many realised that last year's decision [not to grant Georgia the membership candidate status] was both a political and strategic mistake, as well as a mistake based on fairness and merit, I think that by understanding this, the European Union will approach the decision to grant status with a different responsibility this year”, Papuashvili said.

“There is no reason to deny the status [to Georgia] - if someone wants to find an excuse, they will always find it. Hopefully, unlike last year, a fair decision will be made this year”, the chief Georgian legislator concluded.

Papuashvili on Monday highlighted the purpose of his ongoing visit to Romania was to gain the support of his Romanian counterparts for the European Union membership candidate status for Georgia later this year.
