Five individuals have been charged with manufacture and use of forged tax documents, damage to property, negligence and smuggling of “particularly large quantities” of wheat by the Investigation Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia.
The body said on Friday it had found the offenders had issued forged tax invoices between each other to present a fraudulent picture of grain purchase and sale operations on behalf of companies under their management.
Creating a false Value-Added Tax asset worth ₾150,961 ($56,985), the group used it to pay taxes, the Service added.
The offenders had also smuggled 476,347 kilograms of undeclared goods worth ₾337,742 ($127,493) between August-October 2022, causing a loss of ₾231,000 ($87,199) to the state budget.
The crimes are punishable by 11 to 15 years in prison.
