Proud, freedom-loving Georgia shares same values of freedom, democracy with US - PM at US Independence Day reception

Georgia and its people, as a “proud and freedom-loving nation”, share the same values and principles of freedom and democracy that “form the foundation of the enduring friendship” with the United States, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said on Thursday at the official reception held at the US Embassy in Tbilisi on the occasion of the Declaration of Independence of the USA.

In his address, Garibashvili extended his “sincere” congratulations to the American people, and noted throughout history the US “has proudly carried the torch of freedom and democracy, serving as a shining example for the world”, adding it  “has persistently defended” universal human rights and fundamental freedoms, supported development and progress, and promoted the rule of law leaving "a lasting mark on the course of history".

During these challenging times, our close partnership and unity hold great significance in safeguarding peace and stability not just in our region, but also on a global scale”, the PM said, emphasising that Georgia “firmly” stood with the US, as well as with the “esteemed international partners” to “collectively” defend the fundamental norms and values of the international community.

 

The Head of the Government extended his gratitude towards the US Government for its “firm support” of Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity and “invaluable contribution” in bolstering the country’s defence capabilities and enhancing its institutional capacity, stressing the “great importance” for the support extended by international partners in pursuit of peaceful resolutions to Georgia's territorial conflicts amid the existing security challenges.

With the unwavering support of our much-valued partners, I believe that we can bring our aspirations of peacefully united Georgia and our integration into the Euro-Atlantic community within closer reach”, he noted.

On behalf of the Georgian people and the Government, the PM also thanked the US Government for its “robust support” in building democratic institutions and strengthening Georgia’s economy.

I believe the US and Georgia have an untapped potential in trade and commerce. We look forward to unlocking new possibilities to our businesses, [...] I am confident that the direct flight between our countries undeniably will play its important role in achieving the aforementioned goals and will bring our nations even closer”, he stressed.

Major contributions of the US to improving different sectors in Georgia, including  “but not limited to”, healthcare and education, were also pointed out by the Georgian official, who highlighted the importance of “fostering strong and enduring partnerships” between Georgia and the US by supporting people-to-people cooperation.

Garibashvili also thanked the US Ambassador Kelly Degnan, whose tenure in Georgia is almost completed, for her “diligent and tireless efforts in promoting and enhancing bilateral partnership between the two states, and wished her “all the best and success” in her future work, adding she would always be welcome in Georgia.

The guests of the official reception, including representatives of the executive and legislative authorities of Georgia, diplomatic corps accredited in the country, representatives of the private sector, political parties, media and civil society, were also addressed by Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili and the US Ambassador to Georgia.
