US Global Anti-Corruption Coordinator to visit Georgia

Richard Nephew, the Coordinator of the United States Department of State on Global Anti-Corruption, will travel to Armenia and Georgia from Monday to Thursday.
The official will discuss current efforts and challenges for combating corruption and identify areas for further cooperation, the Department of State said.
In Georgia, Nephew will meet with Government officials, representatives of anti-corruption institutions, investigative bodies, and civil society.
Georgia and its people, as a “proud and freedom-loving nation”, share the same values and principles of freedom and democracy that “form the foundation of the enduring friendship” with the United States, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said on Thursday at the official reception held at the US Embassy in Tbilisi on the occasion of the Declaration of Independence of the USA.
The United States Department of State’s Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation on Friday “applauded” the “diligent” work of Georgia to support international financial sanctions and export controls with the support of the US Embassy in the country.
Georgian finance minister Lasha Khutsishvili on Tuesday said the United States was Georgia’s “strategic partner”, adding the quality of cooperation between the sides and its further development was “very important”.
The United States “strongly supports” the desire of Georgia and Moldova to join the European Union, Karen Donfried, the United States assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs, said on Tuesday.
Reforms implemented in Georgia, including in combating corruption, were discussed on Wednesday in a meeting between the Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili and Richard Nephew, the Coordinator of the United States Department of State on Global Anti-Corruption.
