Construction of three residential blocks designed to house 720 internally displaced families has kicked off in the western Georgian city of Kutaisi, with Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili placing a symbolic capsule in the foundation of the new ₾77 million ($29.51mln) construction on Tuesday.
Garibashvli launched the construction of the 12-storey buildings and noted three 16-storey blocks had been already completed as part of his Government’s push to provide IDPs with housing across the country.

He said 320 flats would be completed as part of the initiative “very soon”, as the launch of the new development was coincided with 480 IDP families receiving new apartments in the city.
The construction of the three blocks is due to be completed by late 2025, the Government Administration announced.
Garibashvili also said the budget allocated for IDPs totalled ₾233 million ($89.28mln) in 2023, a number he said was 10 times that of 2012, the year the current Government came to power.
This money is used for the construction of houses, flats [...] In total, over the last 10 years, we have given flats to 31,000 families”, he said, adding “large-scale works are already launched in Tbilisi, Rustavi and Kutaisi” for ensuring further accommodation.

The Government head said 13,000 more families would receive apartments “over the next two to three years”, of which 7,000 would get housing in residential projects and 6,000 would be accommodated in countryside houses as part of the rural housing programme of the Government.
“With our right policy - a result-oriented policy - we will achieve the integration of our country. This is our common goal, a common big dream, and it should be a national goal”, he said at the occasion, adding the Russian occupation of regions IDPs have fled from over the decades would end up being “temporary”.
