Georgian Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri on Wednesday extended his gratitude to police officers for service on their professional day.

In his speech at an event dedicated to the date, Gomelauri highlighted the law enforcement’s “tireless” fight against crime.

“Today is a kind of thanksgiving day. I want to once again loudly, publicly and deservedly say thank you for the sleepless nights, dedicated service to the motherland, tireless fight against crime, for the lives of other people saved at the cost of your own health and lives. I would also like to thank your families for their support and assistance”, Gomelauri said.

Today, here we all celebrate Police Day - the day of those people who serve their country with dignity and loyalty every day, 24 hours a day; protect the state border and security of their country, as well as public order, human rights and freedom; fight crime, fight for people's safety and health, and to save their lives. You are creating a safe present and peaceful future of our country”, he told police professionals.

Gomelauri also paid tribute to the memory of the police officers who died on duty with a moment of silence, and noted the state “stands on the heroism” of such police officers.

Unfortunately, many honourable police officers died in the fight for the unity of Georgia and while performing their duties. It is on the unforgettable merits and heroic examples of such police officers that the Georgian state stands, and the Georgian police continue their path”, he noted.

The Minister also stressed that he would not allow the discrediting of honourable police officers, by saying that "I will always be a defender of your honour and dignity".
