The Georgian State Security Service on Wednesday announced the detention of six Georgian citizens charged with supporting the Islamic State through links with “one of the influential leaders” of the terrorist organisation.
The service said its Counterterrorism Centre had detained the individuals, who had planned “various types of terrorist activities in several countries”, following a simultaneous operation in four locations in Georgia.

Head of the Centre Bacha Mgeladze said the Service had obtained evidence on terrorist acts planned by the group in a foreign country, before sharing the information with partner states.

It noted a foreign national was also a subject of the investigation and held at the Migration Department of the Georgian Interior Ministry.
