Elguja Berishvili, the First Vice President of the Georgian National Olympic Committee, has been awarded the Pierre de Coubertin Medal for his contribution to the Olympic movement, Georgia’s Sport Ministry revealed on Monday.

The official was informed with his selection for the award by Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee, who told Berishvili the Executive Board of the body had selected him for his “outstanding services” to the community.

The selection makes Berishvili the first Georgian to receive the medal, with the formal ceremony to be hosted at a later date.

Named after the founder of the modern Olympic Games, the medal was established by the IOC in 1997 and is granted to people for their promotion of the “Olympic movement and the Olympic spirit”.
