The ongoing situation in Ukraine, European Union sanctions against Russia and Black Sea region security issues were discussed during a meeting between Nikoloz Samkharadze, the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) MP who chairs the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, and Hubert Knirsch, Germany’s Ambassador to Georgia on Monday.

At the meeting, Samkharadze underlined Germany was an “important partner” of Georgia and “our country counts on Germany's support in security and economic matters.”

We expect that the conclusion of the European Commission on Georgia’s EU membership application will be positive and Georgia will continue to follow the path of the reforms in order to get closer to the EU. We hope for Germany’s support in this direction as well,” the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) MP said.

The Georgian Parliament will consider the draft resolution on Georgia's accelerated accession to the European Union this week.

The draft resolution contains 13 points and calls on EU member states and institutions, as well as the Georgian Government, to take all necessary steps to accelerate Georgia's accession to the Union.

Georgia officially applied for membership on March 3, with Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili signing the country’s membership application.
