Georgian reconciliation minister discusses Russian occupation with new German ambassador

Tea Akhvlediani, the Georgian state minister for reconciliation and civil equality, on Monday met Peter Fischer, the newly appointed German ambassador, to discuss the Russian occupation of Georgian territories and existing ties between Georgia and Germany, the minister’s office said.
Akhvlediani thanked the diplomat for Germany's “strong support” for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and its integration into Euro-Atlantic structures in the discussion.
The two officials reviewed legal and humanitarian situation in and near the Russian-controlled regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia), with the minister briefing the ambassador on steps taken by Georgian authorities for peaceful resolution of conflicts and the improvement of socio-economic conditions of the conflict-affected population.
Fischer, a career diplomat who joined the German federal foreign office in 1986, replaced Hubert Knirsch as the German ambassador to Georgia in late August. Before taking office, he served as his country’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.
The ongoing situation in Ukraine, European Union sanctions against Russia and Black Sea region security issues were discussed during a meeting between Nikoloz Samkharadze, the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) MP who chairs the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, and Hubert Knirsch, Germany’s Ambassador to Georgia on Monday.
Georgian and German foreign ministers on Tuesday signed a “comprehensive deal” on cooperation in the fields of culture, education and science, with the agreement also offering opportunities to strengthen people-to-people contacts, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.
Peter Fischer, the newly appointed Ambassador of Germany to Georgia, on Monday said the friendship between the two countries would bring new projects in bilateral relations.

Georgian defence minister Juansher Burchuladze on Monday discussed his country’s “close and fruitful cooperation” with Germany, as well as prospects for a further strengthening of ties with Peter Fischer, the newly appointed German ambassador, and, Andreas Sebald, the country’s new defence attaché.
Thea Akhvlediani, the Georgian State Minister for Reconciliation and Civil Equality, on Thursday said an updated strategy and action plan with regards to the country’s Russian-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) and Abkhazia regions and the conflict-affected population was expected to “give a new impetus” to the reconciliation process and confidence-building through a “depoliticised dialogue”.
