Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili reaffirmed the Government’s support for Ukraine amid Russia’s military aggression in a letter to Ruslan Stefanchuk, the Chair of the Verkhovna Rada, on Saturday.
In comments to his counterpart, Papuashvili expressed his disappointment over Georgia’s solidarity with Ukraine having been recently “overshadowed” by “political speculation” and “utter disinformation campaigns”.

“The slander about Georgia’s alleged swerving from the path of Ukraine support is simply not true,” he asserted, pointing out Georgia had itself experienced a full-scale Russian military aggression [in 2008], with consequences lasting for decades.
The Parliament Speaker further highlighted Georgia’s efforts to support Ukraine on an international level, including at the United Nations General Assembly, the International Criminal Court and the Council of Europe, where the country denounced Russia’s attack.
Georgia and Ukraine are indeed closely connected with strategic partnership now, and with historic friendship for centuries,” Papuashvili wrote.
Russia started its military invasion on February 24, following President Putin’s announcement of the recognition of the independence of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk on February 21.
The international community has condemned the invasion, expressing support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
