The Georgian government will raise the matter of accelerating the question of its European Union aspirations, Nikoloz Samkharadze, the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) MP who chairs the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, said on Tuesday.

The statement follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s submission of an official request to allow his country to gain “immediate” EU membership under a special fast-track procedure as it defends itself from the ongoing Russian invasion.

Samkharadze said he believed if Ukraine was granted the EU candidate status, Georgia and Moldova would also receive it.

“Our embassy is working on this issue. The president [Zourabichvili] is also in Brussels. She will have high-level meetings and this issue will also be raised,” the MP said in comments on the matter.
