Peter Fischer, the ambassador of Germany to Georgia, on Monday said his government would work “very closely” with Georgia on the country’s European integration.

Germany will work very closely with Georgia on the European integration issue. What we need to do is many specific projects in politics, as well as in economy, environmental protection, culture and, very importantly, projects related to youth involvement. This is the road to Europe”, Fischer said in an event dedicated to German Unity Day.

The German ambassador also commented on the implementation of the EU conditions for granting Georgia the membership candidate status, by saying it was “too early” to assess the progress on the issue.

The government and parliament have a very ambitious legislative agenda, but we will have to see the results. The process must be inclusive, democratic and pluralistic, but most importantly, the outcome must be in line with EU standards”, he concluded in his comments.

On June 24, the European Council granted the membership candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, and said it would be ready to grant the same status to Georgia once the outstanding priorities outlined by the European Commission would be addressed by the Georgian government.
