Frank Schwabe, a member of the German Bundestag, on Monday said Georgia was a “part of Europe” and added his country supported European integration aspirations of the former.
Georgia is a respected member of the Council of Europe. Our union is doing everything to bring your country closer to Europe and European institutions”, the German official told the Georgian Public Broadcasting.
Schwabe also commented on domestic political developments in Georgia on the backdrop of the country’s work on meeting conditions for EU membership candidate status, and noted it was “necessary to lower the political temperature” and the level of internal confrontation in the country.
Georgia is part of Europe and we support it. My main recommendation is that it is necessary to lower the level of political temperature and internal confrontation in the country. Then the process [of Georgia’s accession to the EU] will go faster”, he concluded in his comments.
Georgian prime minister Irakli Garibashvili on Tuesday said his government would fulfil all conditions outlined by the European Union for granting the country the membership candidate status.
Domagoj Hajduković, the chair of the European affairs committee of the Croatian parliament who is on a visit to Georgia, on Tuesday said he was “very disappointed” that Georgia had not been granted the European Union membership candidate status in June, while expressing his confidence that once necessary reforms are implemented, the country will receive the status.
Peter Fischer, the ambassador of Germany to Georgia, on Monday said his government would work “very closely” with Georgia on the country’s European integration.
