Georgian chess player Sopiko Tereladze has “convincingly” won the European Senior Chess Championship among women, the Georgian Chess Federation announced on Wednesday. 

Competing in the 50+ age category, Tereladze had started the competition third in the ratings with 2141 points, behind Slovakia’s Martin Mrva and Austria’s Andreas Druckenthaner.

She also featured with “great success” in the men’s section, the Federation said, competing for the title until the last round and ultimately finishing fourth. The latter result marked a new high for Georgian female players.

With 61 competitors from 15 European countries, the European Championship 2022 began on July 5 in Lublin, Poland and is set to close today.
