Georgian chess players have successfully opened their participation on Saturday in the 22nd European Women's Individual Championship in Czech Republic capital city of Prague.

Three chess players, Nana Dzagnidze, Nino Batiashvili and Diana Lomaia, from a total of seven Georgian participants in the championship, had defeated their opponents in the first round, the Georgian Chess Federation said.

The Federation highlighted the victory of debutant Lomaia, who had defeated her Armenian counterpart Susanna Gaboyan and noted that Georgian players have been considered as “absolute favourites” of the championship among 125 players from 27 countries, as three of the Georgian participants are in the top four of the ranking list, with Dzagnidze, European champion of 2017, being at the top of the list.

The tournament has 11 rounds and is held in the Swiss-system format, a non-elimination format that features a fixed number of rounds.
