A memorandum of cooperation to further develop ice hockey in Georgia was signed on Wednesday by Georgian Sport Minister Thea Tsulukiani and Luc Tardif, the President of the International Ice Hockey Federation.
The Georgian Public Broadcaster said the parties had agreed to develop infrastructure in Georgia and promote the country’s athletes, coaches and referees for participation in international events.
Tsulukiani also highlighted the achievements of the national Hockey Federation, as well as the “excellent results” of the Georgian Figure Skating Federation at the Olympic Games, saying the results showed winter sports in the country should be “given more attention”.
The Minister announced a decision to build a “modern ice hockey palace” in the Olympic Village in capital Tbilisi with the support of the international governing body.
She also said the Federation would supply Georgian athletes with “high-level” inventory and equipment to ensure further development of the sport at the national and club levels.
In his comments, Tardif highlighted the work of the national Federation for developing the sport in the country.
