A project promoting introduction of media literacy in the Georgian formal education system has been launched with the aim of helping students develop critical thinking, effective communication and civic participation.

The Communications Commission of Georgia said on Wednesday the first phase of the initiative would involve research on media literacy at schools across the country. An educational standard for the subject, a manual and a corresponding training module for teachers will also be developed for all levels of the general education school.

Ghassan Khalil, a representative of the United Nations Children's Fund in Georgia, which partners the country in the project, said media literacy would help to develop children and young people as “critical thinkers, effective communicators and active citizens”.

In her comments, Georgia’s Deputy Education Minister Tamar Makharashvili noted the importance of media literacy as a subject for education.

The project is implemented in partnership with the Georgian Education Ministry and with financial support from the United States Agency for International Development.
