Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, on Thursday said the lawmaking body welcomed the recently submitted formal European Union membership bids from Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.

[W]e were the institution to welcome the application from all three countries [Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine]. We understand the difficulties, and the challenges, and the threats that those countries are under,” Metsola said.

She also noted the EU legislative body was in “constant contact” with Georgian partners and representatives of the Georgian Parliament over the country’s bid.

On March 11, the European Council invited the European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union, to submit its opinions on the EU membership applications of the Moldova and Georgia.

Georgia officially applied for membership on March 3, with Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili signing the country’s membership application.
