US State Department Spokesperson says Georgia “important partner”

Georgia is an “important partner” of the United States in a partnership that has been “demonstrated in different ways”, the Department of State Spokesperson Ned Price said during a briefing on Thursday.
In comments at the press event, Price said the US was “committed” to its partners throughout the Black Sea region on the backdrop of Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine.
Georgia is a country that knows the specter well and appreciates the specter of Russian aggression. It is a country that with the support of the international community endured aggression of its own just 15 or so years ago in 2008,” the State Department official said.
Price pointed out Washington was continuing to stand by Georgia and its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
There are many Georgians in the Government and private citizens who are standing in solidarity with their counterparts in Ukraine, Department of State Spokesperson Ned Price said during a briefing on Thursday.
US Senator Chris Coons expressed his hope the European Union would “swiftly” welcome Georgia as a new member during a joint press point with Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili in Tbilisi on Thursday.
The ongoing war in Ukraine, the security situation in the Black Sea region, and the strengthening of partnership between Georgia and the United States were discussed by Irakli Garibashvili, the Prime Minister of Georgia and Kelly Degnan, the United States Ambassador on Thursday.
The United States Government is in close contact with Georgian counterparts and the latter have stood by the international community over Ukraine, Ned Price, the US State Department Spokesperson, said in response to a question over allegations of Russia smuggling sanctioned products using Georgian territory.
The ongoing United States support for Georgia is “especially important”, Nikoloz Samkharadze, the ruling Georgian Dream MP who chairs the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, said on Friday.
Questions of deepening the Georgia-United States strategic partnership, and the security challenges in the Black Sea region were discussed on Friday in a meeting between Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili and a US Congressional delegation on visit to the country.
The United States supports Georgia’s NATO aspirations and the country is already an important partner of the alliance, Ned Price, the Spokesperson for the Department of State, said in a press briefing on Tuesday.
