Tbilisi City Court has obliged the opposition-minded TV Pirveli to pay compensation for moral damage to police officer Gela Kvashilava after the television company accused him of drug trafficking.

TV Pirveli spread the allegations on January 30. The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs dismissed the report, saying that it served to 'weaken public confidence towards the police.'

Kvashilava filed a lawsuit against TV Pirveli over false information in February.

It was a false information and fabricated news spread about me. I am deeply confident that justice will be served, Kvashilava said.

The court eventually ruled that Kvashilava was not involved with drug trafficking, while TV Pirveli 'deliberately misled' the public. In addition to imposing a compensation, TV Pirveli was also ordered to announce the court's decision on Saturday's broadcast.
