Georgian Patrol Inspector Gela Kvashilava has won a civil dispute against the opposition-minded TV Pirveli over spreading false information in the Supreme Court of Georgia, the Ministry of Internal Affairs  announced on Tuesday.

The Supreme Court upheld last year’s [17 March] decision of Tbilisi Court of Appeals, which obliged TV Pirveli to pay compensation for moral damage to Kvashilava, as well as ordered the channel to deny the false information.

The Court ruled that the information disseminated about Kvashilava by the media report had been “defamatory and slanderous” and “deliberately misleading” for the public.

Kvashilava initially filed a lawsuit against TV Pirveli on January 30, 2021, after the television channel accused him of drug trafficking and posted his picture, despite receiving a note from the Strategic Communications Department of the Interior Ministry on the “incorrectness” of information.
