State Security Service: obstruction of ex-president Saakashvili’s transfer to prison hospital planned

The Georgian State Security Service (SSS) has stated that the obstruction of ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili’s transfer to the prison hospital is planned following the 29 days of hunger strike since his arrest on October 1. 

The body has launched an investigation into an alleged plan to overthrow the government. 

The participants of the case are planning some destructive actions, in particular, [they aim] to prevent Mikheil Saakashvili from being transferred to the Gldani No. 8 facility if his health condition deteriorates,” the SSS states. 

The body claims that the participants of the case aim to create uncontrollable situation and chaos in the country in order to hinder the process of Saakashvili’s transfer to the prison hospital. 

The SSS also published the audio material allegedly recorded at the presidential library of Saakashvili in which the supporters of the largest opposition the United National Movement (UNM) party discuss the ways to obstruct the Saakashvili’s transfer.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili stated yesterday that Saakashvili has plans to stage a provocation if he is brought to a civil hospital.

Saakashvili, who served as the country’s third president from 2004 to 2013, refused to cooperate with the medical council and to receive hunger-related treatment earlier today.  

He was sentenced to six years imprisonment in two cases of abuse of power in absentia in 2018, and additionally is charged with several other offences, including illegal seizure of property, embezzlement, illegal rally dispersal, and illegal border crossing.
