The head of the Georgian State Security Service (SSS) Grigol Liluashvili has stated earlier today that ‘interesting facts and proceedings await us ahead’ following the disclosure of an alleged plan to overthrow the government involving the obstruction of ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili’s transfer to the prison hospital who has been on hunger strike since October 1.

If the scheme had not been deciphered, we might have more tense processes in Georgia today,” Liluashvili said.

The body announced yesterday that it launched an investigation into an alleged plan to overthrow the government based on information confirming that a certain group of people was plotting such a plan.

The SSS published the audio material allegedly recorded at the presidential library of Saakashvili in which the supporters of the largest opposition the United National Movement (UNM) party discuss the ways to obstruct the Saakashvili’s transfer.

Liluashvili noted that the authenticity of the audio material is confirmed by the participants of the conversation, stating that ‘the case contains signs of a criminal offence.’

The audio recording features Beso Tserediani, a member of the UNM.

The audio material released yesterday clearly showed how individuals spoke of mobilising destructive forces, blocking roads with vehicles, blocking government agencies and storming,” the SSS reported earlier today.

Mikheil Saakashvili, who served as the country’s third president from 2004 to 2013, has been sentenced to six years of imprisonment in two cases: an attack upon opposition MP Valeri Gelashvili, who was assaulted and gravely injured by armed men in Tbilisi in 2005, and the murder case of Sandro Girgvliani in 2006.

He was found guilty of abuse of power in both cases in absentia in 2018, additionally, he is charged with several other offences, including illegal seizure of property, embezzlement, illegal rally dispersal, and illegal border crossing.
