Ruling party announces large assembly of its supporters in Tbilisi ahead of run-offs

The ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party has announced they will hold an ‘assembly of its supporters’ on central Freedom Square in the capital Tbilisi on October 27, with ‘thousands of participants.’
GD head Irakli Kobakhidze urged the public earlier today to actively participate in municipal election run-offs on October 30, ‘to ensure the victory of the ruling party candidates in all 20 constituencies.’
Only several days are left before run-offs. We are destined for victory in all constituencies where the second round of elections is scheduled,” Kobakhidze said.
He has dismissed reports that the ‘assembly of supporters’ is a counter-rally to the United National Movement (UNM) opposition party demonstration held on October 14.
It will be a summarizing assembly of our supporters to once again show the power of the Georgian people fighting against evil (against the UNM),” Kobakhidze said.
He stated that ruling party supporters significantly outnumber those who attended the recent UNM rally.
We need as many drivers alone to bring our supporters to Tbilisi as participated in the UNM rally,” Kobakhidze said.
The municipal election run-offs will be held in 20 of 64 majoral and majoritarian elections constituencies.
The Georgian Central Election Commission (CEC) says that 2,088,722 voters have been registered to participate in municipal election run-offs on Saturday, while the number of eligible voters stood at 3,497,345 in the first round of elections on October 2. The total number of voters in Tbilisi, which will also hold run-offs, is 1,002,525.
A number of people in western Georgian cities are standing along the highway with brooms to protest the United National Movement (UNM) rally in Tbilisi later today, where demonstrators will demand the release of former president Mikheil Saakashvili from prison.
According to the final results of the first round in the race, the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party received 46.74 per cent of the vote, the United National Movement (UNM) opposition party received 30.68 per cent of the vote while ex-PM Giorgi Gakharia’s For Georgia party garnered 7.79 per cent of the vote.
