Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has addressed crowds at a large assembly organized by the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party today, where he said that the country has a government which is ‘well-aware of the needs and necessities’ of its people and is taking ‘all steps’ to ensure Georgia’s stable and peaceful development.
The rally is being held just days before the country will return to polls in local runoff elections on Saturday, October 30.
Garibashvili noted that in the history of the country, ‘the Georgian Dream alone managed to ensure long-term peace and stability which was crucial to implement fundamental, democratic reforms.’

He stated that the Georgian Dream government is focused on the future. However, he said, the Georgian people must not also forget the past, noting “History is the best teacher. We must not repeat the same mistakes.”
He vowed that all the individuals, who have committed crimes and were engaged with torture and supression of the Georgian people, will be held accountable.
Sooner or later justice will prevail. We will never forgive the suppression of the Georgian people, the loss or the sale of Georgian lands, discrediting the Georgian church and Patriarch Ilia II,” Garibashvili said.
He stated that many former officials,’who had committed crimes’ under the United National Movement (UNM) government, have been held accountable, while the ‘main figure of the bloody regime’, Mikheil Saakashvili, was arrested earlier this month.

We have sent him to prison for a long time,” Garibashvili said.
GD chairman Irakli Kobakhidze said that the arrest of Saakashvili and winning all remaining 20 constituencies in the run-offs are the preconditions and ‘a unique opportunity to finally end polarisation (and the UNM) and move to the new stage of state development.’
The ruling party will oppose not a healthy political force in the run-offs, but a radical, anti-state and anti-church group which has been hampering state development over the past 18 years,” Kobakhidze said.
Parliament Speaker Kakha Kuchava stated that the Georgian Dream is the ‘only political force’ in the country which is able to ensure the country’s long-term, stable and peaceful development.
