The ruling Georgian Dream party’s candidate for Batumi mayor, Archil Chikovani and the United National Movement opposition party’s candidate for Poti mayor, Gigi Ugulava have tested positive for Covid-19.
In his Facebook post Chikovani says that a repeat test has confirmed the virus.
Archil Chikovani has noted that he will continue the election campaign remotely.
I will be back to the election campaign very soon. There is a second round ahead, in which I will definitely win with you [the public]”, Chikovani wrote on Facebook.
Gigi Ugulava has also informed the public about his Covid status through Facebook.
I feel good, I’m vaccinated against Covid-19… Will participate in the election campaign online until I recover. Not a single day is to be lost. Victory is near”, Ugulava wrote on Facebook.

A second round of mayoral elections are expected in all five big cities of Georgia, including Tbilisi, as none of the candidates received at least 50% + 1 of the vote.Municipal elections are held in Georgia per a mixed electoral system. Voters have to fill three ballot papers: the first ballot paper is for mayoral candidates (which are elected per a 50%+1 system). The winner is the candidate who will receive at least 50%+1 of the vote, otherwise a second round of elections will be held).

A second round of mayoral elections could be needed in five large cities including Tbilisi where the ruling Georgian Dream party candidate Kakha Kaladze is leading. As of 10 a.m. October 3, the results of 360 precincts out of a total of 769 in Tbilisi are: Kakha Kaladze/Georgian Dream – 45.28% and Nika Melia/United National Movement – 34.27%.
Just three days after public and private kindergartens resumed operations across Georgia, 14 of them have already closed due to confirmed Covid-19 cases. The closed kindergartens will resume operations on October 18, announces the Kindergarten Management Agency of Tbilisi.
The ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party head Irakli Kobakhidze has stated that the GD won the so-called referendum announced by ‘the radical opposition’ with 66 per cent of seats in city councils (Sakrebulo) nationwide. Kobakhidze said that the ruling party counts on increasing the figure to 68 per cent after the runoff.
Georgia has reported 2,844 new cases of Covid-19 after conducting a total of 38,042 tests over the last 24 hours. Out of the 2,844 new cases 775 were reported in Tbilisi. Meanwhile, 814 individuals have recovered and 29 infected patients have died.
