Newborn dies of Covid-19 Delta variant in Tsitsishvili Children’s Clinic

A newborn has died of the Covid-19 Delta variant in Tsitsishvili Children’s Clinic in Tbilisi earlier today.
Medical director of the clinic Maia Chkhaidze told local media outlet Interpressnews that the patient’s health condition had been critical.
The newborn was transferred from Russia-occupied Abkhazia to Tsitsishvili Children’s Clinic in early July. The patient had respiratory complications and was on artificial respiration”, Chkhaidze said.
This is the second case of an infant’s death from coronavirus in Georgia.
Another newborn died of coronavirus in Tsitsishvili Children’s Clinic on July 16. The patient was infected with Alpha, the British variant of the coronavirus.

A newborn transferred from occupied Abkhazia to Tsitsishvili Children’s Clinic in Tbilisi has tested positive for the Delta Covid-19 variant. Director of the clinic Davit Rekhviashvili says currently there are three newborn children with respiratory complications in the clinic who have tested positive for coronavirus.
Georgia has confirmed 20 cases of the Delta Covid-19 variant, Head of the National Disease Control Center (NCDC) Amiran Gamkrelidze says. Gamkrelidze also said that up to 15-20% of people in Georgia are being infected with this particular strain.

Facemasks may become mandatory outdoors again in Georgia in groups of 5-6 people due to increased Covid-19 cases, Head of Georgia’s National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Amiran Gamkrelidze announced earlier today. However, the order has not been formally issued yet, the coordinating council will review the proposal.
The Delta variant currently accounts for over 80 per cent of Covid-19 cases in Georgia, while almost 100 per cent of infections recorded in Batumi and Tbilisi are Delta Covid-19 variants, said Deputy Director of the National Centre for Disease Control of Georgia (NCDC) Paata Imnadze earlier today.
