Infrastructure Minister presents annual report for 2020, discusses future plans

Infrastructure Minister Maia Tskitishvili has presented the annual 2020 for 2020 and discussed the activities the Georgian Ministry of Infrastructure carried out this year.

She said that in total 332,000 people now have better water supply.

In 2020, 20 new schools have been built for 1,530 students in total, while 17 kindergartens have been built for a total of 1000 children,” said Tskitishvili.

As for internally displaced people, 500 IDP families have been given flats in newly built residential buildings in Zugdidi and Tskaltubo.

Tskitishvili noted that this year over 1,300 companies and 31,000 people have been working for 6,000 projects in total.

The minister said that 70 km of expressway has already been completed, while 39 tunnel and 53 bridges reconstruction works are underway on Rikoti highway. Five new tunnels have already been cut there. Rikoti employs 3,311 people out of which 1,988 are Georgian citizens.

As for regional development, by the support of the European Union and the government of Georgia, the Pilot Regions Integrated Development Program started with a total investment of €63 million. The programme includes the Kakheti, Imereti, Guria, Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti regions.

The minister also spoke about transport and noted that with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) out of 175 bought buses for the cities of Gori, Zugdidi, Rustavi, Kutaisi, Telavi and Poti, 88 buses have already been brought to cities.

360 million GEL has been allocated by the Regional Development Fund to improve roads, water supply and for other purposes in the regions. The amount of projects carried out in the regions under support of the Regional Development Fund amounted to 1,065 projects where more than 16,000 citizens have been employed.

The Rural Support Programme financed 4,250 projects chosen by residents of 3,140 villages which cost 40 million GEL in total.

Despite the pandemic, no projects of important strategic importance have been suspended,” Tskitishvili noted.

The minister also spoke about next year’s plans of the ministry.

Next year, the reconstruction of Tbilisi-Sagarejo expressway will start, she noted. 

Additionally, Tskitishvili said that water supply projects will be carried out in dozens of settlements. 

The completion of reconstruction works of 41 schools and 15 kindergartens are also planned for next year. 

Also, 1,020 IDP families will receive flats in newly built residential buildings in Zugdidi, Samegrelo region and Tskaltubo, Imereti region.
