EU study: no Covid-19 cases detected among inmates, staff in Georgian prisons

A new study by the University of Lausanne for the Council of Europe says that during the first nine months of 2020 there were no Covid-19 cases detected among inmates and staff in Georgian prisons. 

Following the overall decrease of European prisons populations during the period of the lockdowns in spring, over  the summer the incarceration rate remained stable in most European countries, including in Georgia, but started to grow in several prison administrations, according to the study.

The report analyses trends in European prison populations during the first nine months of the year 2020 using four points in time as reference: January 1 (before the pandemic), April 15 (the first month of the lockdowns), June15 (the end of the lockdowns), and September 15 (the end of the summer).

In the past 24 hours Georgia reported 2,911 new cases of coronavirus, 2,421 recoveries and 45 deaths.
