Coronavirus: 2,859 new cases, 2,754 recoveries, 18 deaths

Georgia has reported 2,859 new cases of the coronavirus and 2,754 recoveries over the last 24 hours.
Head of the Task Force operating under the Interagency Coordination Council Aleksandre Khojevanishvili announced at a briefing today that the number of total confirmed cases of COVID-19 has increased to 54,852, while the number of total recoveries has reached 39,773.
Khojevanishvili also noted that 18 people have died, increasing the number of coronavirus-related death to 441.
Out of the 18 new death cases:
- 7 people died in Tbilisi
- 4 people died in Adjara
- 4 people died in Imereti
- 2 people died in Kvemo Kartli
- 1 person died in Mtskheta-Mtianeti
Meanwhile, a total of 14,612 people remain infected in various parts of Georgia, while 34,439 people are in self-isolation.
Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, Economy Minister Natia Turnava and head of government administration Natia Mezvrishvili, who have tested positive for coronavirus, have also gone into self-isolation.
One out of 125 coronavirus-infected individuals die in Georgia, said Deputy Head of the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC) Paata Imnadze.
Georgian Public Defender Nino Lomjaria has urged opposition parties to ensure strict observance of all recommendations, rules and restrictions during their election protests imposed to prevent the further spread of coronavirus.
Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, who tested positive for coronavirus earlier this week, has stated that the country needs to broaden the scale of local coronavirus restrictions to make the measure more effective amid election-related street protests.Gakharia said earlier today in an online conference that the opposition demonstrations are expected to cause a sharp increase in new cases of coronavirus.
A 96-year-old woman has recovered from coronavirus in the Black Sea resort town of Batumi, Georgia. Her son and daughter-in-law have also recovered from the infection. All three of them were treated at the International University Hospital Batumi, where the family was taken two weeks ago.
A curfew will go into effect starting tonight in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi, Rustavi, Zugdidi, Gori and Poti between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. amid an uptick in coronavirus cases.The restrictions will not affect international cargo transportation, nor emergency, pharmacy, media and delivery services. The government of Georgia says that this is not a typical curfew but ‘a local restriction of movement’, the violation of which will be punishable by 2,000 GEL.
