Honey from Ninotsminda, the Samtskhe-Javakheti region has been added to the list of geographical indications.

The special quality, features and reputation of this product, which is due to the environmental conditions and human factor typical of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, are recognised at the state level,” said the National Intellectual Property Center Sakpatenti.

The Samtskhe-Javakheti region is located near Turkey and Armenia which makes it easier to export this ‘unique product’ to neighboring countries, notes Sakpatenti. 

Tenili cheese, Meskhuri Chechili cheese, Borjomi mineral water, Mitarbi mineral water and potatoes from Akhalkalaki are already on the list of geographical indications from this region.

Geographical indication is the name of a geographical place that indicates a certain geographical place and is used to indicate the good the qualities or reputation of which is related to that geographical place, which in turn is due to natural conditions or human factors.

The purpose of the geographical indication is to provide the customer with information about the origin of the product and the characteristics associated with the place of origin.
