Ham from Racha, a region in western Georgia and peaches from Gurjaani, a city in eastern Georgia, will be added to the list of geographical indications.
This will support strengthening producers of the product, help them unite, form an association and promote the product itself”, said the National Intellectual Property Center.
Ham and peaches were discussed under the EU-financed Twinning project which is in its second year and aims to promote the development of the system of geographical indications and appellations of origin in Georgia and to harmonise it with the existing system of protection of geographical indications in the European Union.
Geographical indication is the name of a geographical place that indicates a certain geographical place and is used to indicate the good the qualities or reputation of which is related to that geographical place, which in turn is due to natural conditions or human factors.
The purpose of the geographical indication is to provide the customer with information about the origin of the product and the characteristics associated with the place of origin.
