1,532 cases of illegal logging, transportation of timber recorded in Georgia in Jan-June 2020

The State Sub-Agency Department of Environmental Supervision has registered 1,532 cases of illegal logging and transportation of timber throughout Georgia in January-June 2020.

Out of 1,532 cases, 63 of them may be criminally prosecutable, says the agency.

Illegal logging and transportation of timber were recorded in 10 regions:

  • Kakheti - 609 cases
  • Imereti - 199 cases
  • Ajara - 151 cases
  • Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti  - 138 cases
  • Kvemo Kartli – 131 cases
  • Shida Kartli – 112 cases
  • Samtskhe-Javakheti – 111 cases
  • Mtskheta-Mtianeti – 39 cases
  • Guria – 25 cases
  • Racha-Lechkhumi and Lower Svaneti – 11 cases

Six cases of illegal logging were recorded in Tbilisi.

The agency reports that 149 cases of violations of technical regulations at sawmills were recorded in the first six months of the year.

In total, the agency recorded 2,700 cubic meters of illegally extracted timber in January-June 2020.
