The State Sub-Agency Department of Environmental Supervision has registered 1,532 cases of illegal logging and transportation of timber throughout Georgia in January-June 2020.
Out of 1,532 cases, 63 of them may be criminally prosecutable, says the agency.
Illegal logging and transportation of timber were recorded in 10 regions:
- Kakheti - 609 cases
- Imereti - 199 cases
- Ajara - 151 cases
- Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti - 138 cases
- Kvemo Kartli – 131 cases
- Shida Kartli – 112 cases
- Samtskhe-Javakheti – 111 cases
- Mtskheta-Mtianeti – 39 cases
- Guria – 25 cases
- Racha-Lechkhumi and Lower Svaneti – 11 cases
Six cases of illegal logging were recorded in Tbilisi.
The agency reports that 149 cases of violations of technical regulations at sawmills were recorded in the first six months of the year.
In total, the agency recorded 2,700 cubic meters of illegally extracted timber in January-June 2020.
The State Sub-Agency Department of Environmental Supervision has recorded 155 cases of illegal logging and transportation of timber throughout Georgia in May 2020. Out of 155 cases, nine of them may be criminally prosecutable, says the agency.
The Georgian parliament has approved the draft amendments to the Forest Code with its third reading which allows Georgian Patriarchate to gain ownership of forest areas of 20 ha adjacent to orthodox churches and monasteries throughout the country.

The State Sub-Agency Department of Environmental Supervision has registered 3,573 cases of illegal logging and transportation of timber in 2019.
The State Sub-Agency Department of Environmental Supervision (DES) registered 4,121 cases of environmental violations throughout Georgia in January-June 2020.
2,754 cases of illegal logging, transportation of timber were recorded in 2020, says the Ministry of Environmental protection and Agriculture.

A total of 306 cases of illegal transportation of timber were recorded across Georgia in 2022, marking a 24 percent increase over 2021, the Revenue Service of the Georgian Finance Ministry said on Tuesday.
