155 cases of illegal logging recorded in Georgia in May 2020

The State Sub-Agency Department of Environmental Supervision has recorded 155 cases of illegal logging and transportation of timber throughout Georgia in May 2020.

Out of 155 cases, nine of them may be criminally prosecutable, says the agency.

Illegal logging and transportation of timber were recorded in 10 regions:

  • Kakheti - 41 cases
  • Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti - 31 cases
  • Imereti - 25 cases
  • Ajara - 17 cases
  • Samtskhe-Javakheti – 15 cases
  • Kvemo Kartli - 13 cases
  • Shida Kartli - 6 cases
  • Guria - 5 cases
  • Racha-Lechkhumi and Lower Svaneti – 1 case
  • Mtskheta-Mtianeti – 1 case

The agency reports that 30 cases of violations of technical regulations at sawmills were recorded in May.

In total, the agency recorded 553 cubic meters of illegally extracted timber in May.
