External trade of Georgia down 11.8% in January-April 2020

Georgia’s external trade turnover amounted to $3.46 billion in January-April 2020, which is a decrease of 11.8 per cent compared to the same period of last year, show preliminary data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

The value of exports decreased 11.9 per cent and reached $778.2 million, while imports also decreased 11.8 per cent, amounting to $2.46 billion.

The trade deficit of Georgia in January-April 2020 amounted to $1.46 billion which is 42.2 per cent of total trade turnover.

Georgia's top trading partners

Turkey, Russia and Azerbaijan  were Georgia's top trading partners in January-April 2020.

Trade turnover with Turkey reached $469.3 million, $395.7 million with Russia and $367 million with Azerbaijan. 

Georgia’s top exported commodities in January-April 2020 were:

  • Copper ores and concentrates - $215.7 million (21.5% of total exports)
  • Motor cars - $134.8 million (13.5% of total exports)
  • Ferroalloys - $91.8 million (9.2% of total exports)

Meanwhile, the top import commodities were:

  • Motor cars - $186.1 million (7.6% of total imports)
  • Petroleum and petroleum oils - $171.2 million (7% of total imports)
  • Copper ores and concentrates - $166.1 million (6.7% of total imports)
