Twenty-one of 25 infected ambulance doctors around the country are from Bolnisi municipality in eastern Georgia, which is inhabited mostly by ethnic minorities.
Head of the Emergency Situation Coordination Centre Amiran Gogitidze says that it remains unknown how the ambulance doctors in Bolnisi contracted the virus.
We do not know whether they got infected from a patient or from their family members,” Gogitidze said, adding that one of the ambulance doctors from Bolnisi showed symptoms of the virus earlier than others and he might have been the source of infection for several of his colleagues.
Gogitidze said that the ambulance doctor in Tbilisi who is infected with the coronavirus contracted the virus from a family member.
Marneuli and Bolnisi municipalities in eastern Georgia were placed under lockdown on March 23 after a local, 62-year-old woman tested positive for COVID-19 after coming into contact with dozens of people.
