An installation by Georgian contemporary artist Vajiko Chachkhiani will represent the country at one of the major art occasions of 2017 after it was announced winner of the 2017 Venice Art Biennale selection contest in Tbilisi today.

The Berlin-based creator's work Living Dog Among Dead Lions will be displayed at the Georgian pavilion of the 57th edition of the prestigious occasion, running from May 13-November 26 in the Italian city.

The Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia revealed Chachkhiani's submission as winner of the national contest for the Venice exhibition earlier today.

Living Dog Among Dead Lions was selected for participation in the international event after a jury of five Georgian and foreign art critics and professionals reviewed 20 submissions from Georgian artists.

The team included Culture Minister adviser and Tbilisi State Academy of Arts professor Giorgi Gegetchkori, Tbilisi History Museum curator Lili Mamatsashvili and Georgian artist and former Venice Biennale participant Akaki Ramishvili.

The three Georgian professionals worked with Tbilisi History Museum project curator and Getty Foundation advisor Charles Merewether and PinchukArtCentre curator Bjoern Geldhof to select the winning works.

The submitted projects were assessed for their compatibility with concepts of the Venice Biennale as well as artistic design, relevance of the budget to the concept and design involved and experience of their respective working groups.

Culture Ministry said the jury had found it demanding to pick a winner due to the "interesting and essentially valuable" nature of the majority of submissions.

Chachkhiani's installation was created to illustrate the effect of "social, political and historical" conditions on human experience, said the Ministry's announcement on the winning selection.

Behind the winning entry, the second place in the contest went to artist Lado Darakhvelidze's project Caucasus History Lesson.

The project The Fourth Room, curated by Tbilisi-based Centre of Contemporary Art founder Wato Tsereteli and painter Nino Chubinishvili, finished third in the selection process.

Vajiko Chachkhiani was born in Tbilisi but is currently based in Berlin, Germany. He is a graduate of Berlin's University of Arts and Gerrit Rietveld Academy of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The Georgian artist is a recipient of the prestigious Rubens Promotional Award of the Contemporary Art Museum Siegen in Germany.

Last month, artwork by Chachkhiani was part of the display Across the Caucasus that featured artists from across the region at the Ioseb Grishashvili Tbilisi History Museum.
