Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili is praising the United States’ (US) contribution to improving Georgia’s education system.

Kvirikashvili positively assessed the US foreign aid agency Millennium Challenge Corporation’s (MCC) $140 million (about 335 million GEL) second compact for Georgia.

Today the Georgian top official met the MCC’s deputy vice president Fatema Sumar in Tbilisi. He said the MCC funds were a "direct investment in Georgia’s future” and he positively assessed the way the program was being implemented in Georgia.

Kvirikashvili said the educational reform was one of the priorities of the Government of Georgia and the MCC’s grant was "the most important program” of US assistance.

Similarly, Sumar said it was "very important” for the MCC to help Georgian students to get a "quality” education in science, technologies and mathematics.

An agreement between Georgia and US on providing financial support to better manage Georgia’s educational sector was signed in 2014. The MCC contract was worth $140 million USD.

Meanwhile, yesterday the Millennium Challenge Account – Georgia announced the US government will invest $14 million USD (about 35 million GEL) to train and support professional development of public school teachers across Georgia.

The professional training initiative will involve all public school principals and 20 000 science, math, informational technologies and English teachers of Grades 7-12. Additionally, 2,000 facilitators will be prepared to offer their assistance to other teachers in each public school across the country.

The project was launched in January 2016 and will last until the summer of 2019.
