Today the President of Georgia pardoned 238 prisoners, but not all of these inmates will be released from jail.
From today 66 convicts will have their sentences reduced while 172 inmates will walk free this afternoon.
A statement by head of the President’s Pardon Commission Zviad Koridze announced among the pardoned individuals 18 were women and three were minors.
Only 172 inmates out of the 238 will leave prison today; 11 women and two minors among them. The remaining 66 will have their terms shortened,” Koridze said.
The Pardon Commission chairperson said the Commission had studied 1,452 cases and had selected 238 inmates to pardon.
Current procedures state the Commission must send its list of prisoners who deserve to be pardoned to the President to sign.
Generally, prison pardon acts are related to public or church holidays. This recent release was connected to the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
