President Margvelashvili pardons 98 inmates

The President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili has pardoned 98 people serving sentences in Georgia’s prisons.

At a special press conference today, head of the Presidential Pardon Commission Zviad Koridze said 74 of the 98 pardoned inmates would walk free today.

Among the pardoned prisoners weas one woman and two minors. The remaining 24 convicts have had their sentences reduced.

Koridze said the pardoned inmates had been convicted of drug related crimes and other cases of serious and minor crimes.

The inmates who had been convicted of violent crimes were not eligible to be pardoned.

Overall the Commission reviewed 589 cases during their July 17-18 meetings.

The last time President Margvelashvili issued a pardon was on June 12, when 226 prisoners have either been released or had their sentences reduced.
