The President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili has pardoned 226 people serving sentences in Georgia’s prisons.

At a special press conference today, head of the Presidential Pardon Commission Zviad Koridze said 180 of the 226 pardoned inmates will walk free this afternoon.

Among the pardoned prisoners were 14 women and one minor. Ten of the 14 women will released tonight and returned to their family homes.

The remaining 46 convicts have had their sentences reduced.

Koridze said the pardoned inmates had been convicted of drug related crimes, transport and security violations, fraud, theft, physical assault and illegal movement at Georgia’s borders.

He said inmates who had been convicted of serious crimes were not eligible to be pardoned.

The Commission has reviewed 1,329 cases so far this year.

The last time President Margvelashvili issued a pardon was during Easter. At the time 70 prisoners were pardoned in recognition of Easter celebrations.
