More than 200 historic Georgian monuments now feature on Google Maps thanks to ongoing efforts by the National Agency of Public Registry to promote Georgian culture and develop the country’s tourism.

Important historical monuments, facilities and complexes like the Nikortsminda, Gelati and Bagrati monasteries can now be located on Google Maps, which is one of the leading online map platforms that can be accessed by billions of internet users worldwide.

From now iconic Georgian sites can be accessed via Google Maps or through its search function. When a user searched for a specific place, the result offered useful information and photographs of the site, if added to the database.

A portion of the photographs showed the site’s historical conditions and features, while other images were taken recently to illustrate their current state.

The latest addition of monuments – along with additional information and coordinates for each site – were compiled and sent by the Public Registry to Google Maps to be included on the online mapping tool.

The state office has spent the past four years trying to get Georgia’s geographical information adequately represented on the mapping platform. The Public Registry started working on the initiative in 2012.

The agency was also behind efforts to add Tbilisi and its cartographic information to Google Maps, a process completed early this year.

Looking ahead the agency said it would continue its work to upload more information on Georgia’s cultural legacy to the online system on a stage-by-stage basis.
