A unique ancient Roman mosaic has been discovered at the Gonio Castle site in the seaside region of Adjara in western Georgia during archaeological works by a joint Georgian-Polish team.

The artistic creation – supposedly dating from the rule of the Roman emperor Vespasian through 69 – 79 AD – represents a geometric mosaic picture made on the floor of a compound in the Castle. The area of the piece comprises roughly 100 square metres.

The discovery was made after three weeks of archaeological work. Photo by Adjara Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.

It was the first such discovery in Adjara, with few similar findings made in Georgia’s other regions. Adjara’s Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport said the mosaic was created by Roman soldiers at the site of their residence.

The archaeological work on the site of the supposed Roman military barracks is currently in its second season. Initiated in 2002, the Polish team’s geodesic and geophysical work at the Gonio Castle enabled researchers to select an area most promising for future discoveries. The area subsequently yielded findings of an ancient bathhouse in 2014.
