Parliament Speaker welcomes bills on Special Investigation Service, Anti-Corruption Bureau in line with EU recommendations

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Monday extended his gratitude to the Legal Affairs Committee of the legislative body for “effectively” initiating bills on activities of the Special Investigation Service and the Anti-Corruption Bureau.

After the European Commission made a decision to recommend the granting of [the European Union membership candidate] status to Georgia, it also issued recommendations regarding further reforms, including matters related to the effectiveness and independence of the Special Investigation Service and the Personal Data Protection Service, as well as the effectiveness and independence of the Anti-Corruption Bureau”, Papuashvili said.

The chief Georgian legislator noted ​​a parliamentary format had been created and meetings held to discuss changes in the bill based on the recommendations of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe.

Legislative amendments regarding activities of the Special Investigation Service will be presented at today's session of the Bureau of the Parliament.

Based on the recommendations of the Venice Commission, the Service will be empowered to publish special reports on matters pertaining to its remit at its own initiative and at the time of its choosing.
